Making the News Account for our project
We've set up an account with the East of England Broadband Consortium for the Come Together Project to be able to submit News Stories.

E2BN's 'Making the News' website works just like a commercial News agency and even produces a 'News Feed' just like the big news agencies - Reuters, the BBC, CNN etc using something called RSS

So now, anyone in our project can produce news story which will be edited, approved and published automatically to the Web.

From there the sky is the limit - your news feed could end up being fed automatically to a computer which subscribes to our feed anywhere in the world!

Making the News Homepage

You can see all our current news stories on the system here

You can see or download a powerpoint instructions on how to submit a story here

(If you submit a story for this project follow the 'regions' link to E2BN, then again to E2BN Schools and then click into 'Come Together - European Project' before finally clicking on 'News' and 'Submit' to send your story. Log in as 'Guest')

Oil Depot blast shakes School
Story by John Warwick

St Lukes School is only about 3 miles from the explosion site.
The school suffered some damage in the blast. We had 10 windows blown in. A lot of glass inside the school. Thankfully the explosion was on Sunday otherwise it could been a catastophe for the school and certainly pupils and staff would have suffered injuries or even worse. The Police and Health and Safety organisations have closed the school. No one was allowed in or near the school for several days. Not even work men, so the repairs could'nt even be done. Tomorrow (Tuesday 13th) will be the second day we have been told we cannot go to school.!!!
I live some twelve miles from the school yet on Sunday morning at just after 6am I was woken by the blast.
Me too - Ed
It sounded so close. Windows rattled and closed doors were opened by the blast.
My daughter woke and thought it was an earthquake!!! It was only when we turned on the television news that we knew what had happened.
Many of our school children live near the blast area.
They will have lots of stories to tell about their experiences.

Thankfully their have been no deaths or even serious injuries from the blast. Thats a miracle!

I attached some pictures that you may wish to use with your pupils. Here is a link to a video clip of the disaster BBC News
And here is another link to more pictures Gallery
See this story in Making the News Comenius Making the News

The fire was finally put out late on Thursday but we were not able to re-open the school before the end of term - Ed

Italy Visit

From the 11th to the 16th of October we all visited the beautiful area of Italy where Fides's schools are. Fides had arranged together with here colleagues a very busy programme. We learned a lot about the geography and culture of the area and we were also able to sample some of the local produce.
Everyone at the schools we visited had made a huge effort to put on a special show for us and we also met with local important people and visited churches, museums and restaurants.
The scenery was fantastic and so were the people we met at the schools, the functions and even the local dance at the hotel. The weather was quite kind to us too although I think we all now understand how much the weather in the mountains could affect school life!
Thank you Fides for such a fantastic programme. I have borrowed some web space from St Lukes School to store some of the photographs.

If you would like to add your photos for Italy or any of the activities to the archives send me a CD - Graham

We've set up a new message board which has a general section, and a section for Pupils and one for Adults. When you go to the site you need to register and then I will put you in the correct group so that you see the correct content. This is so that adults can discuss the project etc in general and pupils can exchange messages with their friends in other countries. Contact Graham if you need more help. News item from Hans
at GS Kalkreuth
I would like to report on our successful flashmeeting with John and his pupils.

Last Wednesday (27th April) John and I had arranged a flashmeeting between his pupils, who are going to Germany and their German hosts. All said their names and then the pupils talked about their hobbies, pets and families.

It was very nice and we understood each other perfectly. We have planned the next flash meeting on next Wednesday at b9.30 UK-time.

Great News on
Internet
Video Conferencing
We have found another way to allow us to do video conferencing via the Internet

The following has been submitted by Chris (Mail Chris)

Hello everyone,
At last we have found a successful way of Video-Conferencing between the schools in the 'Come Together, Right Now' project. This involves using a website and a system called 'Flashmeeting'
All you need is a webcam (with microphone) and an internet connection (preferably broadband.)
I have produced a document giving basic instructions on how you can try Flashmeeting. Graham will post this document on the website. (DONE!) Download now

If you would like to try Flashmeeting, please read these instructions and then email me with a time you can video-conference, and we will try and link up with you.
See you soon!
Chris

And the good news is that this works with more than two people at once! John will be arranging a video conference using this method for Wednesday evenings. Make sure your PC has 'Flash' installed, as described in the notes from Chris - Graham - Download instructions

German and England have a video conference
St Lukes School have been experimenting with something called flash meeting and managed to get a successfull sound and video link up working today with Germany. The sound was very clear and after a few initial problems we managed to get pictures working too - and had a good conversation!
This was the second time this week we had linked with Germany.

Yesterday John Warwick (Deputy Head at St Lukes) said :-

Today I had an excellent vc using msn with Friedrich. This week Friedrich has purchased a web cam for the school and we succesfully used msn vc facility. my home to his school.

Good chat discussing the trip to Germany in May and the publication of the first poject newsletter. The school has a isdn line and progress is in hand to establish its number so we are able to contact him using isdn.
Another test will take place on Tuesday. Watch this Space for more news!

Steve and Graham Link up
There was a further link up this week with Steve and Graham. We tried to use the camera - but a dial up link is really too slow for that. Come on Steve - get yourself on broadband!

Successful voice link up with Italy
There was a successful voice link between Italy and Plaistow this week. Project leader Steve Potter said "It was amazing - just like being in the same room". That's not bad when both parties were using a standard dial up connection.
This is thought to be the first time that we have achieved a successful voice link with the Italian project team.
